The world. 

I've been in the world 37 hours.

...

I've seen persons with different faces, and bigness, and smells, talking all together. 

The world's like all TV planets on at the same time, 

so I don't know which way to look and listen. There's doors and... more doors. 

And behind all the doors, there's another inside, and another outside.

 And things happen, happen, HAPPENING. It never stops. 

Plus, the world's always changing brightness, and hotness. 

And there's invisible germs floating everywhere. 

When I was small, I only knew small things. But now I'm five, I know EVERYTHING!

There's so much of "place" in the world. There's less time because the time has to be spread extra thin over all the places, like butter. 

so all the persons say "Hurry up! Let's get going! Pick up the pace! Finish up now!". 

Ma was in a hurry to go "boing" up to Heaven, but she forgot me. 

Dumbo Ma! So the aliens threw her back down. CRASH! And broke her.

We all help each other stay strong. No one is strong alone. 

You know, you and your mom, you help each other through, don't you?

I love you Grandma.

I love you too Jack.

When I was four, I didn't even know about the world, 

and now me and ma are going to live in it forever and ever until we're dead. 

This is a street in a city in a country called America, and earth. 

That's a blue and green planet, always spinning, so I don't know why we don't fall off. 

Then, there's outer space. And nobody knows where's heaven. 

Ma and I have decided that because we don't know what we like, 

we get to try everything. 

There are so many things out here. And sometimes, it's scary, but that's okay, 

because it's still just you and me.

Bye, plant. Bye, chair number one. Bye, chair number two. Bye, table. 

Bye, wardrobe. Bye, sink. Bye-bye, skylight. 

Say bye to Room, Ma.

부모와 자식은 서로를 양육한다. 그리고 서로를 통해 다른 우주를 발견하고 그 안으로 성큼성큼 걸어나간다. 조이처럼 끔찍한 시련을 겪은 엄마가 아니더라도 누구라도 그러할 것이다.

이야기의 발단이 되는 사건 자체가 믿기 싫을 만큼 자극적인데도 영화는 특유의 달콤쌉싸름하고 아기자기한 분위기를 자아낸다. 동심에서 비롯된 힘이다. 잭의 흠 없는 동심이 완벽하게 스크린 위에 구현된다. 어린 나이에도 빼어난 제이콥의 연기와 감독의 탁월한 감각이 맞물린 결과다.

단어 하나 하나와 그 대사를 전달하는 톤, 발음, 눈망울의 흔들림까지 완벽한 연기였다. 특히 세상 밖으로 나온 잭이 처음으로 본 하늘과 그의 표정, 눈빛을 잊을 수가 없다. 이 장면은 연출도 참 좋았다. 세상의 사람들에겐 별 것 아닐, 맑은 하늘, 그 아래를 가로지르는 전신주의 전선들. 흔한 도시의 풍경이 갓 '태어난' 것이나 다름 없는 잭에게는 얼마나 충격적이었을지.

보는 내내 너무나도 먹먹하고 아프고 따듯하고 사랑스럽고 보드라워서 꿈을 꾸는 것만 같았다.

제이콥 트렘블레이는 이 영화로 캐나다 스크린 어워드 영화부문 남우주연상 등을 거머쥐었다. '아역배우상', '신인상'은 당치도 않은 참으로 주연상 감이었다.
